Rule of Life
Being a disciple, follower, or apprentice of Jesus means practicing the way of Jesus together for the renewal of the world. But how does it become anything more than just words on a page? Simply by being human, you are being formed—either by Christ or our culture. That is why we view spiritual formation as “counter-formation” out of the way of the world, and into the likeness of Jesus. This means, to resist being formed by our culture, we must order our lives in a particular way—creating an eco-system for spiritual formation.
Rule of Life
-
We practice Sabbath as a way of resisting the cultural current of hurry, productivity, and exhaustion. Instead, for a portion of time each week we choose to stop our work, experience deep rest, delight in God’s goodness, and worship him.
Baseline Practice
Identify a set amount of time each week to resist hurry, productivity, and busyness and intentionally stop, rest, delight, and worship.
Reach Practices
Commit to a 24-hour day of Sabbath each week.
Consecrate this time with the lighting of candles, ancient prayers and blessings, and a meal.
Sleep a full 8 to 9 hours every night for a week
Practice a digital Sabbath (abstaining from your usual technology usage)
Utilize a “Sabbath box” (a physical container to keep devices, distractions, or even money out of reach)
-
We practice a life of prayer by setting apart time each day to be with God in order to grow closer to him, become like him and partner with him to do what he's called us to do in the world.
Baseline Practice
Set aside a few, focused minutes each day to be with God, talk with him, and invite him to respond.
Reach Practices
Choose one or more days each week for an extended time of 30-60 minutes in prayer.
Practice a light and life-giving version of “fixed-hour prayer.”
Participate in our monthly Worship & Prayer Gathering
Sign up for a weekly hour of prayer in our Prayer Room at prayEVV.org

For centuries, the eco-system for spiritual formation has been referred to as a rule of life. While often practiced individually, a rule of life was originally practiced within a community. At Sojourn, we are on a five-year journey developing our Community Rule of Life, made up of nine spiritual practices as understood in the Scriptures. Together, these practices have shaped the lives of Jesus-followers throughout history.
As a church community, covenant members at Sojourn are committed to baseline practices expressed in a variety of ways based on life-stage and capacity. There is also the invitation to explore the reach practices. Ultimately, this is merely our effort to faithfully practice the way of Jesus together for the renewal of the world.
