Introduction:
This is a simple study guide to help you and your family get into the word together during the week. Sunday's sermon will be over the passage listed below. However, the study guide is independent from and not a prerequisite for the sermon. Additional information and points will be drawn out on Sunday... But until then... Dive into the Word, ask the Spirit to teach you something new, and let us all take time to listen to our God. Opening Question: This chapter is one of celebration. What has the Holy Spirit recently done in you that gives you reason to rejoice? Read Romans 8:1-13 Explore the Word: 1. Romans 7 described how the law of sin brought about our spiritual death. What has God done to free us from the law of sin and death (v. 1-4)? 2. In verses 5-8 Paul divides all of humanity into two categories: those who live according to the sinful nature and those who live according to the Spirit. In your own words, what are some characteristics of each group? 3. There are many professing Christians whose lives seem very different from Paul's description of life in the Spirit. How do you think Paul would account for this fact? 4. In verse 12 Paul concludes that we have an obligation. Describe in your own words the negative and positive aspects of that obligation (v. 12-13). Apply the Word: What evidence do you see of your life being controlled by the Spirit? Pray the Word: Spend time thanking God for the gift of the Spirit and the difference he makes in our lives.
